There was an excellent turn-out for this event, which has attracted an increased number each year for the past 3-4 years. I was pleased to see that very few competitors had missed controls. I was concerned about the easy course in particular. For some controls on this course the route to the next control was not along a path. Instead, I had set it up so that the next control could be seen from the previous control, providing the person was looking in the right direction and knew what feature to look for. I thought this would make it more interesting and challenging, and encourage more use of a compass and greater awareness of mapping symbols. My concern that it would prove too challenging turned out to be groundless.
I missed the event myself. A car ran over the foot of my son, Peter, as he was coming home from school a few hours before the event was due to start. So I was in A&E rather than at Kibblestone. Fortunately, Peter was not too badly injured -- just one fracture to a meta-tarsal. It could easily have been much worse. Many thanks to those who stepped in to run the event in my absence -- particularly John Piggott and Henry and Brenda Morgan.
Some things for the committee to ponder:
An observation that may be of interest to those who completed the long hard course -- nettles seem to sting much less when they're sopping wet.
Cagoule with wallet in pocket belonging to Callum O.
