Having not planned an event for several years, I was grateful to Barbara Farr for both inviting me to plan Biddulph Grange and for checking that my courses were about the right length and difficulty. Your results further confirmed this. The woods are not technically difficult, but they make for a very scenic run and, with a couple of sporting hills, provide the opportunity for some challenging route choices.
Saturday dawned bright but cool which deteriorated to
cloudy by the time we were setting up and starting. Then halfway through
the event it snowed, sleeted, rained and hailed all at the same time and
this was followed by the sun and then more sleet. To the credit of all of
you, not one person complained about the weather, and there were several
kind compliments from those who had enjoyed their courses (even from one
competitor following her spectacular stream crossing swim whilst
making a brave attempt at a direct route between controls). The best
comment of the day goes to Brenda, who asked me if I knew that Henry was
Welsh. The best retort was from Austin who, when asked by a competitor how
long the course would take because he had to go to a wedding, asked politely
if the gentleman in question was the groom.
Thank you all for your tremendous support by coming to the event. Especial thanks to Austin, Barbara, Brenda, Henry, Jean and Marian for all their hard work on the organisation and for Geoff and Jonathan who helped me retrieve the controls. Also, to John Heaton for the last minute production of additional maps.
Finally, apologies for the misplaced control number 121 on the Short Hard (and Long Hard Part 1) Course. It was still within the correct circle, but should have been on the Eastern Crag.
