Web Site Privacy Policy

This is one of several POTOC web sites:

The POTOC public web site
This site is hosted on an ISP's server, with high availability and high bandwidth.

The POTOC members-only web site
This site is hosted on a private server. Availability may be intermittent and bandwith is limited. The site is similar to the public site, but contains some additional information intended for club members. Users have to supply a username and password, but the site does not contain any confidential information and a guest username is freely available; contact the webmaster.

The POTOC development web site
This site is hosted on a private server. Availability may be intermittent and bandwith is limited. The site is similar to the public site, but is used to test changes and may sometimes fail to work as intended.

These sites have broadly similar privacy policies, though they differ in detail. This policy relates to the public web site.

Personal Information

This site does not collect personal information.

Contact details for committee members and event organisers are published on this site, with their consent.

Results of orienteering events are published on this site; these results will include the age class and club membership of the competitors.

Cookies

If a browser has JavaScript enabled when it is used to access this web site, a 'cookie' may be created. This may record choices made by the browser user, and whether some pop-up texts have been displayed. This cookie may be used later to repeat the choices automatically, or to avoid displaying the pop-up texts again. The lifetime of the cookie is limited to three months. Suppressing or deleting the cookie will allow the pop-up texts to be redisplayed earlier than intended, possibly to the irritation of the user, and may require some simple choices to be remade; apart from this the absence of the cookie will have no effect.

Server logs

Server logs keep a record of the origin (IP address) of each request, the URL in the request and the name and version of the browser which submitted the request. Almost all servers log this information, which in some cases could be used to identify the individual person who caused the request to be submitted.

The logs may be used to determine which parts of the site are actually used, and which browsers should be supported. This can be done without identifying individual users.

Server logs are retained in filestore for about a year.

When the web site is used to send a message to a POTOC contact, full details of the message, including its content, are logged.
